Residents in Western Australia’s Dandaragan Shire have been told it’s “too late to leave” and to “take shelter” from bushfires.
Authorities say residents should seek shelter in a room with running water and a clear escape. For instance, residents should stay in a kitchen or laundry. Otherwise, residents are advised to shelter at a beach.
The coastal region is about two hours north of Perth. It has been under bushfire advisories amid out-of-control blazes for much of the week.
Those in surrounding areas have been warned to be ready to act if conditions worsen.
Further details
Local school Cervantes Primary has been closed temporarily due to the conditions.
On Thursday, Dandaragan Shire President Tony O’Gorman said the bushfire has spread about 48 kilometres since the start of the week.
O’Gorman described the fires as “intense” and “quite difficult to fight” particularly due to changes in wind conditions.
Fire danger ratings are ‘high’ for large parts of the state.
