Cairns helicopter crash leaves pilot dead, unanswered questions

The pilot of a helicopter that crashed into a Cairns hotel has died, police have confirmed.

The aircraft collided with the roof of the DoubleTree hotel in the early hours of this morning and burst into flames.

All guests were evacuated from the hotel. According to Qld Ambulance, “there were no injuries sustained by people on the ground.”

Qld Police said the pilot was the only person on board the helicopter at the time of the incident.

Cairns helicopter crash investigations

An exclusion zone remains in place around the hotel in Cairns, in Far North Queensland.

An update from Qld Police said the Forensic Crash Unit was working alongside the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to prepare a report for the coroner.

The pilot is yet to be formally identified.

Investigations are continuing.
