Three months into his new job, Australian coach Ange Postecoglou has led Tottenham Hotspur to the top of the English Premier League (EPL).
Postecoglou came into the role after a tumultuous last season, which saw two coaches stood down due to poor performances.
However, after eight matches, Tottenham are yet to lose a game.
Who is Ange Postecoglou?
Postecoglou coached the Brisbane Roar to consecutive A-League championships in 2011 and 2012.
He went on to coach the national men’s team, the Socceroos, in 2013, before resigning in 2017.
In the years since, Postecoglou has led teams to season wins in Japan and Scotland.
Tottenham
Tottenham has never won the Premier League.
Postecoglou was announced as coach in June, shortly before Tottenham’s all-time leading goal scorer Harry Kane left the club. Longtime captain Hugo Lloris wants to leave the club, and hasn’t played for Tottenham this season.
Tottenham finished eighth overall last season, despite usually finishing in the top six of the 20-team EPL.
Ange Postecoglou’s success
Postecoglou’s achievements at previous clubs have been attributed to an attacking style of play — designed to give his teams lots of shots on goal to increase the chance of scoring.
Tottenham has had immediate success with Postecoglou’s methods, with the most attempted goals of any club in the league.
What happens next?
The EPL is a 38-game season played until May, meaning Tottenham has a long road ahead before it can be considered a serious contender for the Premier League trophy.
Tottenham is tied first on the EPL table with North London rivals Arsenal. The two sides drew 2-2 in a match earlier this season.
Tottenham will play their next match on Tuesday morning (Australian time).
