The Matildas are through to the Olympics after beating Uzbekistan 10-0 in Melbourne.

The team went into the sold-out qualifier with a three-goal lead, following a win over an at-home Uzbekistan on Saturday night.

The Aussies will join 11 other countries in the Olympic women’s football tournament in Paris this July-August.

Matildas path to Olympics

Australia is part of the Asian Football Confederation. Teams from the region play for one of two Olympic places.

The Matildas had a strong run throughout their qualifying games, including an 8-0 win against the Philippines in Perth last year.

As part of a two-game series, the Matildas beat Uzbekistan 3-0 on Saturday night in near-freezing conditions. Temperatures reached 36 degrees in Melbourne today.

Olympic hopes for Matildas

Now that they’re through to Paris, the Matildas will have a chance to become the first Aussie squad to win an Olympic medal.

The team narrowly missed out on bronze in Tokyo three years ago, where they lost 4-3 to the USA.

Captain Sam Kerr is not expected to be included in the Olympic squad after she ruptured her ACL earlier in the year.
