Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will be Australia’s next Ambassador to the United States. The appointment was announced today by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Rudd will begin the role in 2023, when the term of current Ambassador and former Liberal Minister Arthur Sinodinos ends.
Previous Ambassadors include former Treasurer Joe Hockey and former Opposition Leader Kim Beazley.
Albanese says Rudd brings “unmatched experience” to the role.
In a statement, Rudd said he was “greatly honoured.”
“I look forward to continuing the work of Ambassador Sinodinos in strengthening the bonds between our two countries.”
Former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tweeted congratulations.
“I cannot think of any Australian with better connections than Rudd has in the Biden administration or with more influence on geopolitical issues in DC,” Turnbull said.
