A supermoon will be visible in the skies across Australia this afternoon but, but its best viewing time will be later this evening.

Today’s supermoon event comes a month after the blue supermoon.

A supermoon occurs three to four times a year, while a blue supermoon occurs once every two to three years.

Supermoons are the “biggest and brightest moons of the year,” according to NASA.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth during its orbit — around 363,000 kilometres away.

There are three to four supermoons a year.

This year’s first supermoon was a blue supermoon in August.

Today’s is the second supermoon. A third one will occur on 17 October, and a fourth on 15 November.
