The world’s oldest person has died aged 117 years, 168 days.

Maria Branyas Morera, born in 1907, lived through the Spanish Civil War, both World Wars, and two global pandemics.

Her family announced her death on social media, stating she died “peacefully” at her nursing home in Catalonia, Spain, where she had lived for the past two decades.

The oldest living person is now Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who is 116.

Morera was the oldest person to survive having COVID-19, which she contracted in April 2020.

Before her death, Morera told Guinness World Records that her long life was due to “order, tranquility, good connection with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people.”

She added: “I think longevity is also about being lucky. Luck and good genetics.”
