Yesterday, the national arts council, Creative Australia, presented its landmark report into the state of Australia’s music festivals – and it’s not good news. Over a third of Australian music festivals lost money last year, losing almost $800,000 on average. The cost of putting on a festival has rapidly increased, its harder to get insurance, and people are buying tickets closer to the time of the festival.

In this deep dive, we speak to Mitch Wilson, the Managing Director of the Australian Festival Association, about how they felt when the report was presented, and exactly why they think the government needs to start investing more into music festivals.
