The UK will enforce a lifelong ban on buying cigarettes and vapes for anyone born after 2008.
Both houses of UK Parliament have now voted in favour of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which was first introduced more than two years ago.
The legislation has been described as one of the world’s strictest smoking bans.
Here’s the latest.
The bill
Under the legislation, it will be illegal to sell tobacco products in Britain to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009.

The bill will also give ministers new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging.
The reforms are aimed at creating a “smoke-free generation”.
Then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak first announced the reforms in October 2023, before a bill was introduced to UK Parliament in March 2024.
Labour, which was in Opposition at the time, supported the measures. It has since formed government under PM Keir Starmer.
Both houses have settled on a final draft of the bill, which will become law when it receives royal assent next week.
UK Minister for Mental Health Gillian Merron called it “the biggest public health intervention in a generation… it will save lives.”
