At least 15 innocent people have been killed and 42 others hospitalised after gunmen opened fire at a Jewish community event at Bondi Beach in Sydney’s east.

Hundreds had gathered to celebrate the start of the Jewish festival of Chanukah.

The mass shooting has been declared a terrorist attack.

Here is a timeline of how events unfolded.

Sunday 14 December

Families were celebrating the beginning of Chanukah (the Jewish festival of lights) at the ‘Chanukah by the Sea’ event at Bondi Beach.

Two gunmen started shooting from a footbridge near the event.

Video showed crowds fleeing for safety as shots rang out.

Police officers in the area responded to emergency calls.

A shootout ensued between police and the gunmen. One gunman was killed. The other was taken to hospital.

Video also shows a bystander tackling one of the gunmen and then turning the gun on him.

That bystander was Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner. His family members have told media he is recovering in hospital after being shot twice.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “That man is a genuine hero, and I've got no doubt there are many, many people alive... as a result of his bravery.”

The shooting lasted for more than ten minutes.

Police established a crime scene and closed the beach. At least two officers were injured.

The gunmen killed 15 innocent people. Police believe their ages range between 10 and 87.

Some have been named. They include:
