The Daily Aus is committed to protecting your privacy. We manage your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with — including our commercial partners and Futureproof clients — and the rights you have over it.
In this policy, "The Daily Aus", "we", "us" and "our" refer to The Daily Aus Holdings Pty Ltd (ABN 19 636 427 408), of Sydney, Australia. A copy of the APPs is available at oaic.gov.au.
By using our services, you accept the practices described in this policy.
This policy applies whenever you interact with us, including through:
Information collected for the purposes of journalism — including reporting on stories, contacting sources, and editorial research — is governed by our Editorial Standards and is not covered by this policy.
This policy does not apply to third-party services we link to, such as podcast platforms, social media networks or sponsor websites. Those services operate under their own privacy policies.
You can read most of our content without giving us any information. We collect personal information directly from you when you:
The information you give us may include your name, email address, age range or date of birth, postcode or general location, occupation or industry, and any free-text responses or comments you choose to provide.
We do not ordinarily collect sensitive information as defined under the Privacy Act. Where we ask for sensitive information — for example, demographic background as part of an opt-in research project — we will explain why and seek your consent at that point.
We do not collect or store payment card details. Payments are handled by our payment providers under their own privacy and security arrangements.
When you use our services, we collect information about your device and how you engage with us, including:
We use cookies and similar technologies to support these functions, as described under "Cookies and tracking technologies" below.
We sometimes receive information about you from analytics and audience-measurement providers, social media platforms where you engage with us, commercial partners running co-branded activations, and publicly available sources where relevant to a story or commercial relationship.
We combine the information we collect to generate insights about audience interests, preferences and behaviours. These inferences inform our editorial decisions, our commercial work, and our research products. We rely on aggregated and de-identified data wherever possible.
We use AI tools, including the Anthropic API, to help us theme, summarise and analyse audience responses (particularly free-text answers to polls and surveys). When we use AI on this material, we do so in a way that strips identifying information and produces aggregated outputs.
The only data we share publicly is aggregated survey and poll data — statistical insight based on the collective view of a cohort, expressed as trends, percentages and patterns over time.
No individual reader is ever identified, profiled or referenced in our published reports, newsletters or social content. Where we quote a free-text response, we do so anonymously and only with the responder's understanding that responses may be shared in this way.
The same standard applies to insights we share with Future Brief clients and commercial partners: aggregated and de-identified, never individual.
We use your information to send you the newsletters and content you have subscribed to, personalise the content we recommend, manage your account and preferences, and respond to your messages, complaints and requests.
The Daily Aus runs regular polls and surveys with our subscribers and audience. Participation is always opt-in.
We use poll responses to:
Individual poll responses are not linked to identifiable subscribers in any product or report we share externally. Where we summarise or quote free-text responses, we do so in aggregate or anonymised form.
You can opt out of having your responses used in our research products at any time by emailing us. Opting out will not affect your newsletter subscriptions.
Futureproof is The Daily Aus's research and insights product for organisations. It draws on the views of our opt-in audience to help organisations understand how young Australians think, feel and behave.
One offering of Futureproof is Future Brief — a subscription to monthly reports for organisations. Any insights we share with clients are produced from aggregated, de-identified data. Clients do not receive individual responses, contact details, or any information that could reasonably be used to identify a subscriber.
Where we quote or summarise free-text responses, we do so in a way that does not identify the person who gave the response.
We do not sell, lease or rent personal information to anyone, including Future Brief clients.
We work with advertisers and commercial partners to deliver advertising and sponsored content across our newsletters, podcasts, social channels and website. We use audience information to decide which audiences to offer to which advertisers, measure campaign performance, and report aggregated campaign results to our partners.
We do not share identifying information about individual subscribers with advertisers. Where an activation involves passing your information to a partner — for example, a competition where you opt in to hear from the partner — we will tell you at the point of sign-up and you can decide whether to participate.
We use information to understand how our services are being used, improve them, develop new ones, detect and prevent fraud or abuse, and investigate security incidents.
We use information to comply with Australian law, respond to lawful requests from regulators, courts or law enforcement, and enforce our terms of use.
We engage trusted service providers to operate parts of our business. They handle personal information on our behalf and only in line with our instructions. Our current providers include:
This list reflects our current stack and may change over time. Each provider operates under its own contractual privacy obligations to us.
As described above, we share aggregated and de-identified insights with advertisers and Futureproof clients. This data does not identify individual subscribers.
We may also disclose personal information where required or permitted by law, in connection with a sale, merger or restructure of part of our business, or with your consent.
Some of our service providers store and process information outside Australia, including in the United States, Ireland and the European Union. Before engaging an overseas provider, we take reasonable steps to ensure they protect your information in a manner consistent with the APPs.
If you would like to know where a particular piece of information is stored, contact us using the details at the end of this policy.
We use cookies and similar technologies to run essential website functions, remember your preferences, measure how our content and services are performing, and support advertising and audience measurement.
When you visit our website you can accept, reject or manage non-essential cookies. You can change your preferences at any time through your browser settings or our cookie management tool. Some parts of our services may not work properly if you reject all cookies.
We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information, including encryption of data in transit and at rest where appropriate, access controls and authentication for staff and providers, and ongoing review of our security practices.
No system is perfectly secure. If we become aware of a data breach that is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in line with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law. When we no longer need it, we delete or de-identify it.
Aggregated and de-identified research data may be retained indefinitely, as it cannot be used to identify you.
The Daily Aus produces content for an audience that includes people under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16 without consent from a parent or guardian. We do not use information from people we know to be under 16 for profiling, advertising or commercial research.
If you believe we hold information about a child that should not have been collected, contact us and we will delete it.
Under the Privacy Act, you have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond within a reasonable time, typically within 30 days. Some requests, including deletion, may be subject to legal record-keeping obligations.
You can unsubscribe from any of our newsletters using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email. You can also email us to opt out of marketing more broadly.
We update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent version. If we make material changes, we will let you know through our usual channels.
If you have a question or complaint about how we have handled your personal information, email [email protected] with the subject line "Privacy".
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner:
