Neo-Nazi charged over attack on Aboriginal protest site

Neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell has been arrested and charged following violent anti-immigration protests in Melbourne over the weekend.

The 32-year-old faces multiple charges, including violent disorder and assault, and will appear in court today.

Victoria Police confirmed two other men have also been arrested on similar charges.

Sewell’s arrest came shortly after he verbally confronted Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan at a press conference on Tuesday.

Marches

Over the weekend, thousands attended protests organised by the anti-immigration group March for Australia.

Neo-Nazis and far-right protesters were later seen attacking an Aboriginal protest site called Camp Sovereignty, which is located on a sacred burial site.

Victoria Police estimated about 5,000 people gathered in Melbourne, including protesters with the March and counter-protesters. A total of six arrests were made.

On Tuesday afternoon, Victoria Police arrested Sewell and two other men outside the Magistrates’ Court.

Sewell had been at court for another matter.

All three men were arrested and charged over their attack on Camp Sovereign on Sunday.

The two other men were released on bail, and are expected to face the Magistrates’ Court later this year.

Vic Premier

The arrest came shortly after Sewell publicly disrupted Premier Jacinta Allan’s press conference, repeatedly calling her “a coward.”

In a statement following the incident, Allan said the fact that neo-Nazis oppose her is “a badge of honour.”

She said she remains “undeterred” in her commitment to protecting communities targeted by neo-Nazis.
