What is the UN General Assembly, and what's on the agenda?

Global leaders are meeting for the UN General Assembly (GA) this week in New York City.

What is the UN General Assembly, and what's on the agenda?

Their agenda includes Palestinian statehood, climate change, gender equality, and peace in Ukraine.

Last week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the meeting “the world cup of diplomacy”.

Here’s what you need to know.

GA

The GA is the UN’s main “deliberative, policymaking and representative” body.

Representatives of the 193 UN member nations discuss global issues, make recommendations, and introduce resolutions.

The UN was created after World War Two to maintain peace and security, and establish international law.

The GA meets “intensively” every year from September until December. During this time, one week is set aside for “high-level” meetings between world leaders. That is what is taking place this week.

Voting

Votes on important resolutions, including those related to peace, security and the introduction of new UN members, need a two-thirds majority to pass.

Resolutions are formal statements on international issues. They are not legally binding unless they have been “adopted” by the Security Council.

The Security Council is responsible for the “maintenance of international peace and security”. It has 15 members (some permanent, some temporary). Australia is not currently one of the members.

Agenda

Global leaders are convening at the GA in New York City this week.

The theme for this year is ‘Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights’.

A GA summit on the two-state solution is scheduled for Monday afternoon (local time). At this meeting, France will announce its recognition of the State of Palestine.

World leaders are also expected to discuss support for Ukraine, climate change, and gender equality.

Anthony Albanese is attending the GA for the first time as Prime Minister.

He is set to talk about the Government’s social media ban for under-16s, and the new 62-70% emissions reduction target.

It has also been speculated that Albanese will meet U.S. President Donald Trump for the first time.
