Severe weather warnings are in place across Australia’s south-east today, after high winds caused significant damage over the weekend.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued alerts for damaging winds across Victoria, NSW, Tasmania, and South Australia.
Residents in NSW’s Illawarra region are advised to stay alert due to Extreme Fire Danger, while flood warnings are active in central and northern Tasmania.
VIC
Victoria’s State Emergency Service (SES) said it received almost three thousand calls for assistance between Sunday night and Monday morning, mostly related to fallen trees and property damage from high winds.
At least 120,000 Victorians are still without power.
A Watch and Act alert has been issued for the state’s south-west coast, where there is high and damaging surf. Residents are warned to stay away from beaches.
NSW
Damaging winds are expected from Newcastle to NSW’s far south today.
Overnight, a 63-year-old woman died when a tree fell on her cabin at Moama, near the NSW-Victoria border.
As of this morning, 37 bush and grass fires were burning across NSW. Five of these hadn’t been contained yet.
A total fire ban is in place for the greater Sydney region and the Illawarra.
TAS and SA
In Tasmania, the BOM has issued flood warnings for the area around the Derwent River. Residents are urged to prepare their properties and leave for a safe place.
Since Sunday afternoon, the Tasmanian SES has received more than 300 calls for assistance.
Following strong winds in South Australia’s south-east yesterday, wind warnings are still active around Mount Gambier. Residents should move vehicles away from trees, secure loose items, and stay indoors and away from windows.
