Sydney and Melbourne woke up to the coldest morning of the year today, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
Below 0°C temperatures were recorded in multiple states, from Tasmania to southern Queensland.
Sydney and Melbourne’s coldest mornings
Parts of Sydney dropped to 6.5°C on Wednesday. The eastern suburbs of Melbourne got down to -1. 9°C, setting a new June record, the BOM said.
Cooler conditions are expected to continue into the weekend.
Cold mornings around the country
Several Victorian and Tasmanian locations set June minimum records including East Gippsland in regional Victoria, where it was -6.4 °C on Wednesday morning.
The BOM said a low-pressure system sitting in the Tasman Sea has brought ”a really cold air mass over eastern Australia.”
BOM Meteorologist Sarah Scully said the system has combined with what’s known as a “high-pressure ridge.” These conditions have brought “clear skies and light winds,“ allowing temperatures to plummet, causing ”those really frosty conditions this morning,” Scully said.
