Israel and Pakistan nominate Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

It is Trump’s second nomination in six months, after Pakistan’s Government also nominated him in June for his role in defusing tensions with India.

Trump has sought the prize since his first term in office.

The prize

The Nobel Committee awards an annual group of prizes for achievements in economics, physics, chemistry, medicine, literature, and peace.

The Peace Prize is awarded to a person or group who has made progress in at least one of five areas:

  1. Control of weapons and disarmament
  2. Peace negotiations
  3. Democracy and human rights
  4. “Creating a better organised and more peaceful world”
  5. Limiting the effects of climate change.

Four U.S. Presidents have been awarded the Peace Prize in the past, including Barack Obama, who received it in his first year in office.

The Nobel Committee selects winners from nominees submitted by heads of state, members of national assemblies, and former Peace Prize winners.

Nominations for the 2025 prize closed on 31 January, meaning Trump’s nominations will be considered for the 2026 award.

Israel's nomination

Netanyahu presented Trump with a copy of his nomination letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee during a visit to the White House on Monday.

The Israeli leader said: “He’s forging peace as we speak, one country and one region after the other.“

The U.S. recently bombed Iranian nuclear sites in support of Israel’s war with Iran, and contributed to peace talks. It is also part of ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Pakistan's nomination

In May, Pakistan and India exchanged missile and drone strikes after India alleged a Pakistani-supported group carried out a terrorist attack in the disputed region of Kashmir.

The U.S. took credit for ceasefire negotiations between the nations.

Pakistan’s government subsequently nominated Trump for his “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis.” India’s government has disputed any U.S. role in the peace process.

Trump's goal

Trump has pursued the prize since his first term, recently saying he “won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize… no matter what.”

Trump was also nominated a number of times during his first term in the White House, including by a group of Australian law professors.

The Nobel Prize committee will now review Trump’s nominations alongside others for the 2026 prize.

The committee has declined to award the prize during years of global conflict, such as the World Wars.
