24-year-old alleged Bondi shooter charged with 59 offences

One of the two men who allegedly killed 15 innocent people at a Jewish community event in Bondi has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon previously said flags from terrorist group IS were found in the suspects’ car.

Here’s what to know.

Bondi

On Sunday, two gunmen opened fire on a Jewish community event in Bondi, killing 15 people.

The alleged shooters were a father-son duo. The 50-year-old father died at the scene. The other alleged gunman, his son, was critically injured and taken to hospital.

Media publications still need to use the word ‘alleged’ because the suspect has not been found guilty.

The 15 people who were killed range between 10 and 87-years-old.

Charges

On Wednesday afternoon, NSW Police announced the living suspect has been charged with 59 offences. This includes 15 counts of murder, committing a terrorist act, and 40 counts of wounding with intent to murder.

The 24-year-old is still in hospital under police guard.

He is expected to appear in court via video link shortly.

It has previously been revealed that the suspect was investigated by ASIO for six months in 2019 for connections to IS.

He was not subject to ongoing monitoring.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has said that “two homemade ISIS flags” were found in the suspects’ car at the scene of the attack.

IS

Australia has listed IS as a terrorist organisation since 2005.

The Australian National Security (ANS) calls it “one of the world’s deadliest and most active terrorist organisations”.

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) released a statement on Tuesday condemning IS.

The group said IS “does not represent Islam or the Muslim world in any way”.
